IHBC Memoranda of Understanding

This page documents each Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the IHBC develops as a 'tool for collaboration' within the action agreed under Aim A.3 of the institute's Corporate Plan 2015-20, or 'CP20'. The Plan was presented to and adopted at the institute's AGM in Norwich on 19 June 2015 (http://ihbconline.co.uk/newsachive/?p=10464).

CIfA

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) was signed in London on 12 May 2016.

Among other benefits, this MoU inspired reciprocal offers of 1 year free 'taster memberships' between the organisations, as well as universal 'member rates' to events for members of both organisations.

COTAC

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Council on Training in Architectural Conservation (COTAC) was signed in London on 21 February 2018.

In the MoU both organisations affirm their operational and ethical ties to the 1993 ICOMOS ‘Guidelines’ on conservation training, strategic commitments in the MoU (see the IHBC Toolbox). Strategic commitments include:

  • Annual meeting of representatives
  • Cross-publication of key articles
  • Business planning strategy (IHBC)
  • Online conservation training (COTAC)
  • Mutually discounted rates for individual members
  • Developing a viable ‘standard’ for Building Information Modelling (BOM) for conservation practice.

The Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO):UK

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO):UK was signed on 24 June 2020.

With both organisations affirming their joint commitments to Local Authority services, the MoU underpins joined-up support for:

  • Working effectively to develop high quality skills and learning environments for archaeologists and conservation professionals
  • Promoting good practice in Local Authority Historic Environment and Conservation Services
  • Influencing legislation and policy affecting the historic environment
  • Promoting advocacy for local authority historic environment and conservation services
  • Securing investment in and support for areas of common interests.

ICOMOS-UKI: nternational Council on Monuments and Sites UK

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Council on Monuments and Sites UK (ICOMOS-UK) was signed on 3rd April 2024.

In the MoU both both organisations affirm their intention to work co-operatively to promote the role of conservation and interdisciplinary conservation professionals in conserving and enhancing the built and historic environments in line with sustainable development goals to support future needs.

Strategic commitments include:

  • Arrange informal meetings between representatives of the two organisations on a regular basis and not less than once a year to ensure on-going information exchange.
  • Ensure, as far as possible, complementarity in the work of the two organisations.
  • Seek to cooperate, where possible, on key events and other activities such as marketing and communications initiatives.
  • Increase awareness of the respective roles and responsibilities of the two organisations

To Join the IHBC free for one year

Members of the CIfA, COTAC seeking the 1 year free trial membership of the IHBC should sign up at:

To take advantage of the 1 year free trial, please complete the form and enter your CIfA/ COTAC membership details in the 'Notes' field at the end of the form.

Completing the form secures Supporter membership of the IHBC until the following renewal period.

PLEASE NOTE: SIGNING UP TO IHBC MEMBERSHIP UNDER THIS PROGRAMME DOES NOT CONFER ANY ACCREDITATION OR GENERATE ANY RIGHT TO USE ADDITIONAL POST-NOMINALS SUCH AS THOSE INCLUDING 'IHBC'.

No payment is required until notices are circulated in advance of the renewal in the following April of each year.

To secure IHBC membership rates at events

To secure IHBC membership rates at events when not a member of the IHBC, simply make full payments at the point of payment and claim any excess back direct from the IHBC using the Expenses Claim Form and procedures HERE, being sure to include your CIfA/COTAC membership details as well.
