The Residential Facades :

Principles For Modification

The Bedroom Windows

Different Proportion (2/3 : 1/3).....

Our Proposals:

The windows are small and mean by contemporary standards.

We propose increasing their area (predominately reversing the

existing 1/3 to 2/3 glass to brick ratio in favour of glass).

They are poorly made (‘low tech’ hybrid solution of aluminium and

timber) Perhaps a modern hybrid ‘velfac’ or similar can offer a

balance of the ‘domestic’ and ‘machine made’.

They are visually complicated (excessive transoms).

Have poor thermal and acoustic performance (single glazed, non-

thermally broken).

High air infiltration (leaky and drafty).

Difficult to operate, clean and maintain.

The existing windows offer limited security. Reliance on opening

windows to provide night time and background ventilation has

negative implications for security.
