The IHBC’s 2026 Annual School in Newcastle explores the timely and complex theme of adaptive reuse of historic and traditional buildings. The School will consider how we understand and protect the significance of these places, while also developing and delivering appropriate, sustainable new uses that secure their future at the heart of our communities and the wider historic environment. The Newcastle School offers in-person and virtual content delivered by a diverse range of expert practitioners and leading advisers, looking across Newcastle and beyond. It gives priority to continuing professional development (CPD) for practitioners with conservation, heritage and interdisciplinary interests. As such, the programme reflects all aspects of the IHBC’s Competences and Areas of Competences. IHBC Annual School 2026 Welcome to the IHBC Annual School 2026 Newcastle | Adaptive Reuse Page 3

Join us at Riverside, part of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, for an evening of celebration as we welcome delegates for the start of this year’s Annual School in Newcastle. The Baltic is the perfect venue for this year’s School theme of adaptive reuse, and an exceptional example of adaptive reuse in its own right, as a former 1950's flour mill converted in the early 2000's following an architectural transformation by Ellis Williams Architects. We will then hear from Dominic Williams, Director at Ellis Williams Architects, regarding the conversion of the Baltic prior to its public opening in 2002, as he presents ‘Fixed shell, Fluid spaces: The Design Evolution of BALTIC’. This will be followed by food service at 20:15, after which we will be joined by our next speaker, Welcome Reception The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art Dr Alison McCandlish, University of Glasgow, for an interactive session titled ‘Sketch and Reflect on the Adaptive re-use of Baltic Flour Mills’. As the evening draws to a close delegates will have a further opportunity to enjoy networking and a visit to the Level 6 Viewing Box overlooking the river and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
