you don’t have to be an IHBC member to learn with us!
And you don’t have to be paid to learn through experience: volunteering can be one of the best ways to build up your experience in conservation.
Many of the IHBC’s services are accessible to anyone using our website, but IHBC membership offers additional opportunities for everyone, both as learners AND as volunteers! Indeed IHBC membership will link you to the specialist network of skilled enthusiasts, many of whom will look especially favourably on anyone whose first step in their conservation career is to seek support as a member of the IHBC.
As a charity dedicated to conservation, the IHBC encourages open access to our work and services, as well as volunteering across all areas of conservation, but IHBC members get the most up-to-date news and publications, and some unique opportunities to get involved. And don’t let the headline fees be an excuse to delay joining up and developing your career: we offer lots of support to unwaged and low-earners, especially if they volunteer! Here are some small tasters on what we have on offer.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & VOLUNTEERING: DEVELOP YOUR CAREER
The IHBC is a professional body that supports the built and historic environment sector. We subsidise IHBC fees for those on low income (under £17,500), and provide additional fee support for students, trainees and other early career heritage specialists with a genuine need and enthusiasm! That enthusiasm is best reflected in taking the trouble to volunteer, so if are keen but cannot get paid work, make sure you build up your skills through volunteering. IHBC membership helps.
Subsidised IHBC membership is available for those on low income (under £17,500). Additional fee support is available for people in need, generally applied to those with an income of under £12,500, especially when volunteering in the sector. Students and trainees are always encouraged to use volunteering as a good way to build skills and contacts, as well as contribute to conservation.

Local Branches of the IHBC organise very cost-effective - often subsidised or free - networking and training events. They also provide invaluable volunteering opportunities to help develop skills.
IHBC Branches offer huge opportunities for members (and often for non-members too). They help you develop professional and linked networks, activities, training and volunteering. You can volunteer with our Branch Committees and help local initiatives, which adds critical experience and contacts!

The ‘Jobs etc’ page is open to all, and links to our social networks on Linkedin, facebook and twitter. . IHBC members can also get direct email alerts of new opportunities.

IHBC’s accredited professional membership, our Full Members, are obliged to carry out Continual Professional Development (CPD), but anyone can target their individual learning needs using our simple CPD tools.
The tools we have developed to guide CPD for our professional members can help students, trainees and anyone else enhance their own conservation and historic environment skills.
They can also help guide you in selecting the most beneficial areas for building skills as a volunteer as well as shape your career. Our tools are used by specialists and researchers from other fields as well, to test their work against wider conservation standards.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING RESOURCES
IHBC’s publications are, for many, the most valuable membership benefit. They include our membership journal, Context, our Yearbook, our ‘NewsBlog’ news service, the membership eletter and the IHBC Research Notes.
As appropriate, we also post publications on our web site. Some, such as the NewsBlogs and eletter, are actually launched online!
