SETTING

The importance of spaces around historic buildings and areas is well established within conservation policy and practice. The immediate context around historic buildings can provide their lifeblood, identity and contribute to their significance, whether it consists of a designed landscape around a country house or a long established medieval street pattern set around a historic church. Equally the loss of historic context to a heritage asset can cut the asset off from the local community it serves and threaten its long term viability.

The National Planning Policy Framework provides a very broad definition of the setting of a heritage asset:
‘the surroundings in which a heritage asset is experienced. Its extent is not fixed and may change as the asset and it surroundings evolve. Elements of a setting may make a positive or negative contribution to the significance of an asset, may affect the ability to appreciate that significance or may be neutral’.

The terms ‘setting’, ‘curtilage’, ‘context’ and ‘character’ are commonly used but not always clearly understood by those preparing or assessing schemes which might impact upon the historic environment.

This conference will explore these inter-related concepts and consider the different ways in which new development can be sensitively designed as well as how its impact can be measured and assessed. The role and contribution of views assessment and historic analysis will be examined alongside a range of case studies drawn both from the North West and nationally in order to highlight examples of best practice. The conference will consider how these concepts can be applied to World Heritage Sites, conservation areas, individual historic buildings and wider designed landscapes. The conference will be of interest to planners, architects, developers, property owners, amenity societies, and all those who manage and care for the historic environment.
VENUE

The event will take place in the Liverpool Medical Institute. It is a 10 minute walk from Liverpool Lime Street, the main city centre train station. Limited public car parking is available on site. A map showing the location is available on the booking website. The entrance is to the rear of the building via the car park.
TOURS

The after-lunch session Experiencing Setting involves a choice of two walking tours in different areas of Liverpool city centre. Delegates must select a tour when booking a conference place. Places on tours will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
