The Roundhouse at Derby is the world's first and oldest surviving railway roundhouse built in 1839 by four rival rail companies. The Roundhouse and neighbouring historic buildings – a former carriage shop and railway workshop, both listed Grade II*, and a Grade II listed office building with a clock tower - were all vacant and derelict for many years. A 16-sided structure with a 40-metre central space, the Roundhouse still houses the large turntable on which steam locomotives were once manoeuvred before repair. In 2008 the Roundhouse and other buildings were restored and converted in a £36 million development to house Derby College, retaining the 12-metre engine turntable. Two new buildings constructed on site include the use of 'chameleon glass' which changes colour depending on the light and angle of view. Delegates will get chance to tour the buildings and see the Roundhouse, Engine Shed and Carriage Shop.
