65 Case Study Two Ministry of Defence Chapter Seven - Case Study - MOD SEVEN Exemplar Building Description Organisation synopsis The Ministry of Defence is responsible for the implementation of government defence policy across the UK, whilst also acting as the headquarters of the British Armed Forces. With principle objectives to strengthen international peace and stability, the organisation is also the largest single landowner in the UK. The organisation owns over 241,100 hectares, including 650 listed buildings, 42 scheduled ancient monuments and 900 scheduled monuments (EH. 2011). MOD’s vision (2010:p3) is to value and promote the sustainable use of its heritage assets, in recognition of the benefits they bring to the environment, the quality of life of defence communities, the nation’s cultural heritage and the role it plays in supporting defence capability on the development of the moral component.
