The visit to Halifax and the Grade I Listed Piece Hall will be the fourth in our series ‘Power of Place’ previous visits in the series include the Weavers Triangle Burnley, the Hepworth Wakefield and Holbeck Urban Village Leeds. Completed in 1779 the Grade I Listed Piece Hall narrowly escaped demolition in the 1970’s, and it was not until 1988 when work began on the repairs and conservation of the nearby Grade II Listed Square Chapel that the historic significance of this quarter of Halifax was recognised.
Our visit will focus on the recently completed £19m transformation project and will take in the Piece Hall including the new Central Library, together with the Square Chapel and Link building. Both these developments were winners of the 2018 RIBA Yorkshire Region Awards and we are planning to have as our guides Senior Partners from both LDN Architects responsible for the Piece Hall and Library, and Evans Vettori Architects responsible for the Square Chapel Link building.
We meet 2-00 pm at the Square Chapel Centre For The Arts on the south-east corner of the Piece Hall. Places are available at £8.00 per person, cheques payable to SPAB Yorkshire Group.
