ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN SERVICES: Listed buildings are a permanent feature of the practice and Martin C. Hall has over 30 years experience much of it in relation to historic buildings. Our practice services include building surveys, both metric measured and building condition. maintenance planning. advice on repairs. designing and managing alterations and major refurbishment projects. We have designed many alterations and submitted listed building and planning applications for secular buildings and faculty applications for ecclesiastic buildings. The practice has worked on all grades of protected buildings, from repairs to substantial refurbishment projects. and can provide a service tailored to your needs including in house quantity surveying and project management by well qualified individuals. Services engineering advice can be provided by a local specialist with whom we have worked on a number of historic and Church buildings. Hall & Ensom provides a personal service throughout the Cotswolds and Thames Valley.

2. Stanton St. John

This is a Grade two star listed building dating from 16th century. 

Works were divided into two phases with the major works involving external stonework repairs undertaken during more favourable summer months. A programme of conservation of stonework was drawn up with detailed pre application discussions with English Heritage and the conservation officer from South Oxfordshire District Council. It was agreed that to conserve as much of the existing stonework the building would be lime washed. We prepared a detailed drawing showing stone replacement and repairs and obtained tenders from specialist contractors. We undertook on site monitoring and liaised with the conservation officer to discharge LBC conditions.





3. 
Cromwell's House

This property is listed grade 2 and was reputed to be General Fairfax's HQ during the siege of Oxford in 1645, hence its name. We undertook a pre-acquisition survey and subsequently advised on a programme of necessary repair works. We reviewed with the clients their proposed alteration works preparing plans and negotiating with the conservation officer for Listed Building Consent for manly internal works — which included a new shower room, reordering the kitchen from an old pantry, external WC and small kitchen to an open plan larger kitchen. Externally repairs involved careful conservation stone repairs to the main front elevation with separate tenders to specialists.
