Describe the work your company carries out

Frew Conservation are independent historic building consultants and training providers, specialising in the conservation and repair of traditional masonry buildings. We operate throughout Scotland and further afield when called upon, providing impartial and objective advice, and training services, to a diverse range of clients.
 
We can take a lead role in advising building owners or a supporting role when working closely with other building professionals and contractors. We provide technical and practical support on masonry conservation and repair projects from inspection and investigation through to technical specification and site supervision.
 
We also work in partnership with a range of respected craftspeople, consultants and existing training providers to manage, facilitate and deliver bespoke traditional skills training events, courses and CPD seminars. Our training offerings are custom made to meet specific local needs and requirements, ensuring the highest quality of training and education for participants, whilst delivering Best Value for the client.

PROJECT 1:

Project: Battle of Bannockburn Monuments

Location: Bannockburn, Stirling




Client: Mansell Construction Services for the National Trust for Scotland

Description: Technical masonry conservation advice on the repair of two 1960’s Category A Listed monuments; King Robert Bruce Equestrian Statue and Bannockburn Rotunda.

Scope of consultancy work included the provision of advice, specifications and site supervision/ quality control for; cleaning historic concrete block masonry, rebuilding granite statue plinth, repointing and mortar repairs to concrete Rotunda.

PROJECT 2:

Project: Fasque House

Location: nr. Fettercairn, Aberdeenshire



Client: Fasque House Properties

Description: Investigation into historic external render and paint coatings to Fasque House and Stableblock.

Technical and specification advice on proposed reinstatement of render and paint finishes. Preparation of a case for render reinstatement to support a formal application for Listed Building Consent.

PROJECT 3:

Project: Campbeltown THI Traditional Skills Training Package

Location: Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute

Client: Campbeltown THI (Argyll & Bute Council)



Description: Delivery of a package of training courses (1-day courses unless otherwise stated) on the repair and conservation of traditional buildings including;
  • Structural appraisal and repair of historic buildings
  • Mortars for repair and conservation
  • Repairing stone buildings (evening lecture)
  • Conservation and repair of stone masonry
  • External render and harling
  • Maintaining traditional buildings (evening lecture)
  • Repair of traditional plasterwork

Successfully delivered with positive feedback – 100% of delegates (all courses) rated the courses ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ overall.
