Describe the work your company carries out

Beacon Planning Ltd is an independent planning, heritage and urban design consultancy specialising in historic buildings and areas.

We are a small and highly experienced team with in-depth knowledge and skills which enable us to provide high quality, robust and commercially-aware advice to all our clients. We enjoy leading and working as part of multi-disciplinary design teams, especially on difficult and sensitive sites and on schemes which seek to integrate new buildings into historic environments.

We work for private individuals, land and property owners, developers, colleges, architects and other property professionals. We also work for local authorities on specific projects and can second staff to cover staff or skill shortages.

Give examples of up to three projects you have undertaken

Project: Mill Lane Old Press Site
Project location: Cambridge
Client: Cambridge City Council / University of Cambridge
Beacon Role: We undertook archival research and site analysis to prepare a Historic Environment Assessment of an area where change is being promoted. The Assessment provides a baseline study of the architectural, historical and townscape significance of the site to guide its future regeneration. The document, following public consultation, forms part of the adopted Supplementary Planning Document guiding the redevelopment of the area.

Project: Oversland Barn
Project location: Kent
Client: Private individual
Beacon Role: Preparation of a historic building analysis to assess the fabric likely to be affected and evaluate its historic and architectural importance to the structure. This information was used by the architect as the basis for the detailed design. We prepared the Planning and Heritage Statements setting out the relevant national, strategic and local policy context and a detailed justification for the works and contributed to the Design and Access Statement.

Project: Harvey Court
Project location: Cambridge
Client: Gonville & Caius College
Beacon Role: Planning & Historic Building consultants for the refurbishment of grade II* listed student accommodation building in the West Cambridge Conservation Area. The building, by Leslie Martin and Colin St John Wilson, was erected in 1961/2 and many elements of the building structure and fabric had reached the end of their useful life. We prepared a detailed historic building assessment to set out the significance of the building and its various elements. This informed the preparation of proposed alterations and formed an appendix to the Heritage Statement that accompanied the successful planning and listed building applications. Beacon Planning were also the planning consultants for the project.
